My Process

A frequent question I’m asked by prospective clients is, “What is your process like?”

I always strive for transparency and providing the best service possible to my clients, so with that in mind, here is a quick run down of what you can expect when you hire me for a design project. As always, if you have further questions, please reach out!

So you are ready to commission a custom cover, and have decided a witchy Canadian is your girl for the job. Fantastic! I congratulate you on you excellent taste.

First things first, let’s get you booked into a commission slot! Typically I am booked 2-4 months in advance, and will discuss scheduling while taking into account your project size, deadlines, and my existing projects. Once we settle on a date, I charge a $35 fee to reserve your spot.

The next step is a contract, and a cover brief! With some basic information on your project, I will provide a contract for your review and signature. I will also provide a checklist of helpful information I’ll need to get started designing your cover. This more detailed cover brief will not be needed until closer to your project’s start date, so typically you can take your time filling this out.

Once the date of your project commencement arrives, I’ll touch base and send your first invoice! I take 50% of my total commission fee as a deposit, with the rest paid upon project completion. My process for revisions is detailed more extensively in my contract, but I’ll include an abridged version here:

Phase One: I deliver first drafts based on your initial cover brief, where visuals, concepts and ideas are established.
Phase Two: Following your feedback on my initial drafts, I will deliver updated drafts for further review and feedback
Phase Three: I deliver a polished draft updated with your phase two feedback for review and fine tuning.
Phase Four: At last! I deliver a finalized file for approval. Your cover is complete, and ready to go!

Some other quick answers to frequently asked questions:

-How do you take payment?: PayPal invoice.

-How long does it take to complete a project?: Anywhere from 3-9 weeks, depending on the project complexity and how many covers you need!

-Can I commission an eBook cover, then separately commission print or audio versions at a later date?: Yes!

-Can I have an editable PSD of my cover?: In select situations I will provide an editable PSD, usually with the main artwork layers flattened.

-What currency do you charge in?: I charge my fee in USD.

-If I require something that is not listed on your pricing sheet, can I still ask for it?: You can always ask! I am open to discussing unique bundles tailored to client’s individual needs.

-Do you read manuscripts before you design the cover?: Due to time constraints, I do not. To create unique custom covers I work with burbs, story summaries, and a cover brief, combined with feedback and an open dialogue with my clients.

-Do you do custom character illustrations?: I used to offer this service, but have since discontinued it.

So, there you have it: my process in a nutshell!

Thank you for taking the time to consider me for your project. I look forward to hearing from you 💜
